Student Health 101 Courses
SLEEP, EAT, AND EXERCISE
Sleep, Eat, and Exercise (SEE) introduces students to the knowledge and skills they need to create a balanced lifestyle while in college, emphasizing basic concepts of sleep, nutrition, and physical activity.
From a student perspective, our SEE course reveals how inactivity, poor nutrition, and inadequate sleep are common problems among college students and are leading contributors to a variety of short- and long-term consequences. This course shares how research indicates that healthy habits can reduce stress and improve academic performance, in addition to improving health.
The Need for Sleep, eat, and exercise
The transition to college involves a lot of change. While students tend to enjoy their newfound freedom, many of them struggle to manage the responsibilities and choices that come along with it. They find it difficult to get an appropriate amount of sleep, make healthy food and beverage choices, and exercise regularly—and there are no more parents, teachers, or coaches to provide structure and boundaries.
When asked about what makes it difficult for college students to be physically active, eat a balanced diet, and get adequate sleep, students are quick to respond, “It’s just hard.” Ultimately, they identify lack of time and knowledge as the largest barriers. Inconvenience, expense, and unimportance are also common.
Sleep, Eat, and Exercise attempts to address all of these issues in hopes of providing students tools they need to live a healthy, balanced life in college and beyond. The course incorporates relevant, current information on all of these topics in an engaging manner. Students are provided with a forum for discussing their concerns and obtaining answers to questions they might have. They are asked to critically reflect on their own health-related behaviors, as well as campus and societal influences. Upon completion of the course, students report they feel much better prepared to juggle the demands of college and to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle in the process.
Why sleep, eat, and exercise Works
In addition to providing information, SEE provides students with practical strategies for getting adequate sleep, eating well, and being active. The course incorporates a variety of techniques to promote self-awareness, reflection, goal setting, and action toward wellness.
